Brian was born in Arkansas in 1968, moved to Texas in 1979, fled to New York City in 1987 to attend Parsons School of Design, lived in Paris France for a few years, ran away to San Francisco in 1993, and since 1999 he has lived in Philadelphia. He works in an old garage. He has worked as an art director and graphic designer, animator for interactivity and multimedia projects, teacher, writer, and illustrator. He has written and drawn comics and graphic novels, designed publications, and illustrated for many many magazines and newspapers. He illustrates children’s books; for magazines, newspapers, and advertising; posters, toys and puzzles. He also works with animation, music, and various other media.

Inspired by a wooden name puzzle I received as a child, I began designing my own puzzles for family and friends, and called them ‘Nuzzles™.’ I’ve now made many Nuzzles™ for people around the world. Every Nuzzle is carefully cut from a single block of wood by hand on a scroll saw. Each name or word is custom-designed and the characters ‘nuzzle’ together using a unique connecting system. Finally, the Nuzzle is hand-sanded and stained for a lasting, rich and durable finish. Every Nuzzle is crafted from a single block of wood, and the characters interlock with each other in a way that creates a sense of harmony and integrity. I’m a Chicago-based designer and studied both graphic design and industrial design at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In addition to the Nuzzles™ project, I design and build furniture, create print, web and multimedia design for a variety of clients, make my own cheese and bread, and run ultra-marathons.
